Hillsboro — The veterinarian expected to be hired to euthanize
animals at the Jefferson County Animal Control center withdrew from
consideration on Wednesday, saying she was concerned about not having a
say over which animals were killed.
A special meeting of the Jefferson County Council to approve a 60-day
contract for Laura Ivan had been set for Wednesday night but was
canceled just hours before it was to begin.
The state ordered euthanizations to cease three weeks ago after the
Post-Dispatch reported that workers were using controlled substances
without a veterinarian present, which is a violation of state
regulations.
Ivan, who runs the Ivan Animal Hospital in House Springs, said she
would agree to supervise euthanasia procedures at the animal control
center only if she had a say in the medical care an animal receives.
The contract offered to her by the county had specified euthanizations
as her only duty.
