FOX WARRIORS
Coach: Jeremy Donald
Last season: 4-22 overall (0-8 in Suburban West Conference)
Top
returning players: Senior -- Brooke Montgomery (5-6, G); juniors --
Amanda Lee (5-7, G), Monica Mays (5-9, F); sophomores -- Maddy Pointer
(5-7, G), Hannah Severin (5-5, G).
Outlook: The Warriors were in
a rebuilding mode last year and the record was somewhat predictable,
especially playing in such a tough conference.
Fox is probably
still a year away of competing in the conference although they could
improve a bit with three returnings starters in Lee, Montgomery and
Mays.
Scoring is going to be a concern as the Warriors graduated
its top scorer, Rachel Heilmann, who averaged 17 points per game. Lee,
the staring point guard, is the top returning scorer at 7.8. She also
led the team in assists. No other returning player averaged more than
five points a game.
This is still a young team with Montgomery being the only senior.
"I
think we will be better with an eye on next year," Donald said. "This
group has good team chemistry and they play hard every second they are
on the court. We just want to make sure we get better every year."
The
Warriors will open their season Dec. 1 in their own tournament. It is
an eight-team tournament which concludes Thursday. Other teams in the
field include: Lindbergh; Rosati-Kain; Seckman; Ladue; Ursuline;
Jennings; and Rockwood Summit
.SECKMAN JAGUARS
Coach: Tim Meeks
Last season: 10-16 overall (1-6 in Suburban South Conference)
Top
returning players: Seniors - Marissa Lehnig (5-9, G/F), Courtney
McKinley (5-10, F); sophomores - Shelby Stuckmeyer (5-11, C), Abby
Hayden (5-5, G), Texas Crowe (5-8, G).
Outlook: Expectations are
high for the Jaguars as they return all five starters, including
Suburban South Conference player of the year Lehnig.
They were able to compete and have double digit wins last season despite starting three freshmen at times.
"We
have nine players on the team and all nine played together for 30 plus
games over the summer," Meeks said. "There is some good team chemistry
on the team."
Lehnig gives the Jaguars a proven go-to player.
The four-year varsity starter averaged 15.8 points per game and also
led the team in rebounding, assists and steals.
"Every team
geared up to stop her last season and she still put up those kind of
numbers," Meeks said. "She does so much for us and she is also very
much of a team player.
"I'm excited about the season. I expect
that we should be able to reach some new heights this season. We want
to make it as far as we can in the post-season."
Seckman is opening the season this week in the Fox Tournament.
WINDSOR OWLS
Coach: Jim Maddock
Last season: 3-20 overall (3-6 in Jefferson County Conference)
Top
returning players: Seniors - Kaitlin Hoffmann (5-6, G), Jessica King
(5-4, F); sophomores - Marissa Cage (5-11, F), Danielle Guseman (5-10,
C).
Outlook: Maddock, who coached the junior varsity girls the
past two years after doing the same with the boys the previous two
seasons, takes over for his first varsity head coaching job.
The Owls will certainly miss Megan Franklin, who averaged 17 points a game last season.
But
they do return three starters, although two (Cage and Guseman) are only
sophomores. Hoffmann, the top returning scorer, was the other starter.
Junior
Sam Baker, who has been coached by Maddock the last two years, will be
the starting point guard. Baker was the leading scorer (15) in a season
opening 42-9 win over Hancock.
The Owls are not likely to hold
another opponent to single digits but defense is going to have to be
solid for the Owls to have a chance to win as they have no proven
varsity scorers.
"We are not a team which is going to be able to
run and gun," Maddock said. "We need to keep games in the 30s and 40s.
We do have five seniors on the team but the main thing we want to do
this year is to get another year of experience and build for the
future."
