After the first day of the state wrestling tournament at Mizzou Arena in Columbia Thursday, 15 of 32 Jefferson County wrestlers have advanced to the quarterfinals. Ten wrestlers lost their first match but stayed alive with a win in the first round of wrestlebacks and seven lost their first two matches and have been eliminated from the tournament.
Northwest still has its county-best nine state wrestlers alive with Tyler Stahlman (112), Jake Waterkotte (140) and Caleb Noland (171) in the quarterfinals. Among those to advance in the area included undefeated Jefferson County wrestlers Andrew Waites (Herculaneum) and Tim Waltenberger (Windsor). Waites improved to 28-0 in the 285-pound weight class, while Waltenberger is now 43-0 at 189.
Class 1 and 2 quarterfinals and second round wrestlebacks begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday. Class 3 and 4 quarterfinals and second round wrestlebacks begin at 1:30 p.m. Semifinals and third round wrestlebacks for all classes begin at 6 p.m.
