Gary Peters remembers racing his father to the family truck when a fire
alarm sounded in the Goldman Fire Protection District in the early '50s.
"I've
been with (the district) since I was 8," said Peters, 65, who has been
Goldman's chief for 22 years. "My dad said I could go with him on calls
if I could beat him to the truck. I almost always beat him."
His
father, Bill Peters, was one of the original members and early fire
chiefs of the district that covers a 35 square mile area north of
Hillsboro. Goldman was officially founded in May 1951.
Ever since, people with the last name Peters have been fighting fires and responding to other emergencies in the Goldman area.
Gary
Peters said four of his five brothers volunteered for the district in
the '70s and '80s, while his two sons and five of his nephews also have
spent time as Goldman firefighters.
