(admin note: This really isn't political, however, until I figure a proper place for these sort of things, I wanted to give our firefighters their due, without having it get lost into the general category!)
When Rock Community Fire Protection District began collecting toys in 1975, the district staff would meet once a week working almost as Santa's elves, refurbishing used toys donated to the holiday toy drive.
Volunteers worked diligently to repair and repaint the toys, making them as good as new for their new owners come Christmas morning. As the years passed, the toys brought in through the toy drive were newer, needing fewer repairs.
Today the district no longer refurbishes old toys but still collects toys to deliver to local children for Christmas.
