Thanks for posting the link to the Jefferson County history. It has been very useful in getting to know more about Arnold.
May I ask you a question about the Venable family history? I have been reading a history of the Civil War battle at Shiloh, Tennessee. Robert E. Lee had a top aide named Venable. This man was most notable because he lost his own son among the troops he commanded at Shiloh. Is he part of your family history? I believe the histories I have read indicate that Venable was from Conway County or Van Buren County in Arkansas. He was evidently a very fine man who carried on in battle even though his own son had fallen, and that General Lee was most moved by Venable's devotion. When did Venables settle in Missouri?

I have not done a lot of research on the Venables. It is a very difficult family to find information on.
My husbands family were from the DeSota area. I hope to be able to learn more about them but have been busy researching my side of the family.
I have been lucky enough to trace my mother and fathers family back so maybe I'll get busy on the Venables.

Thanks. That is interesting, because history records that Hernando DeSoto, for whom DeSoto is named, was the first European explorer who came up what was named the Arkansas River and into the Arkansas territory.

I can tell you that this same Venable was with Robert E. Lee when he surrendered to Grant at the court house. He was held in very high regard. I also believe he went on to write math books and a school in the south is named after him. If you do a search for Venable Elementary.
